Reading the Bible, an idol?

John 5:39 "You diligently study the scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life.  These are the Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life."

Lord, I pray you'd give me life abundant in you.  That I would seek to know not only your Word, but you more deeply.  That when I open your Word, it would be out of desire to know not it, but you.

Reading the Bible, an idol?  Yes, and I was confessing it this morning after reading this verse.  All the times I've opened the Word to avoid prayer, because it was the morning, because I want to memorize it as well as the next person, because I want the knowledge needed to defend my faith.

Reading about Jesus.  About God.  About the Holy Spirit.  But not coming to them.  We need to know his Word, to be prepared to give the reason for the hope we have, to be committed to time with Jesus even when we don't feel like it.  But I pray we would do this from our deep desire to come to Him because he is the source of life...

May I be changed by this life-giving verse today.
